Lucia Islas grew up in Cd. Juarez, Mexico. Being from a border city, she was raised in an environment of dual cultures. The Spanish and English languages are both her mother tongue. This upbringing created in her a sensitivity towards peoples of different backgrounds. She attended schools in both the United States and Mexico to complete her elementary through high school education. She graduated with a B.A. in International Studies from Austin College, in Sherman, Tx. Following graduation, she moved to Paris, France to pursue a career in fashion. This career was continued in New York City, where her bilingual skills earned her a publicist position in the prestigious fashion house, Carolina Herrera. In April of 2010, along with a group of friends from the El Paso and Juarez area, she created Project Paz. A non-profit committed to promote peace in the border region, through the funding of special community projects. She now resides in Austin, Texas and continues pursue her passion for serving communities. She strongly believes that everyone has a voice and is worthy of being heard and understood. As an interpreter and translator for Vida Clinic, she gets to ensure understanding amongst parents and therapists. Thus, helping break down mental health stigmas within the Spanish-speaking community. It is a job she is honored and humbled to be a part of.
